Eco Food Recycling now offer food waste landfill diversion figures

Castlepoint Shopping Park in Bournemouth, one of the many clients that have accurate bin weight figures provided by Eco Food Recycling

Eco Food Recycling, the food waste collection and recycling company, are now able to offer landfill diversion figures to its client base and potential customers.

With many companies now looking to divert food waste away from landfill the Ringwood based company saw an opportunity to provide accurate bin weights uplifted to its clients.A monthly spreadsheet is provided showing the number of bin lifts made along with exact bin weights (to the nearest kg) from each site.

The service was requested as part of the tendering process for various opportunities that the food waste collection company were involved with. Although average bin weights were easy to establish from weighbridge figures it was the accuracy of the data that Eco Food Recycling can give that has appealed to many businesses producing food waste.

Each bin is actually weighed by the operatives on site so that accuracy is paramount.

Eco Food Recycling offer a food waste collection and recycling service in Dorset, Hampshire, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Surrey, Sussex, Avon and Somerset whereby all of the commercial food waste collected is 100 % recycled at a local IVC (in vessel composting ) facility.

Food for thought as local food waste recycling business booms

University of Southampton with Simon Heaps and Andy Jones from Eco Food Recycling

Ringwood based company Eco Food Recycling has bucked the recession … and helped improve the environment.

The business, set up nine months ago by former international sportsmen Andy Jones and Simon Heaps, collects commercial food waste from several local and national organisations including universities, hospitals, schools, hotels, a pub chain, restaurants and shopping centres.

The waste is currently turned into compost but will, later this year, be converted into renewable energy.

The UK produces over 8m tonnes of domestic food waste every year (costing the average family more than £700), but many more millions of tonnes of commercial food waste goes straight to landfill, the worst outcome for the environment as it produces gases that are 25 per cent more damaging than carbon dioxide.

Eco Food Recycling’s clients include universities in Southampton and Winchester, Castlepoint shopping centre in Bournemouth, Tower Park leisure complex in Poole, Paultons Park theme park, Queens Park infant and junior schools in Bournemouth, Whitbread pubs and Premier Inn hotels.

In the first month of trading, Eco Food Recycling recycled just under three and a half tonnes of food waste, by December this had risen more than ten-fold to nearly 38 tonnes … and the business continues to grow.

Co-director Simon Heaps, a former England table tennis international, said: “Recycling is a hot topic. Unless businesses and governments address this issue it will have grave consequences for our environment.

“Controlling waste streams is vital to any business, and the service we offer gives clarity and can help reduce costs.”

Fellow co-director Andy Jones, who played football for AFC Bournemouth, Port Vale, Leyton Orient, Charlton and Wales, added: “It‘s hard work, but very satisfying.

“We don’t just recycle food waste, we weigh and analyse it, then discuss potential improvements to the service.

“We‘ve succeeded because our clients are equally committed to making it work, they too buy in to the huge benefits, not just for them, but the environment as well.”

Case Studies …

Staff at Royal County Hospital Winchester were staggered to discover that over a tonne of food was being wasted each week. Eco Food Recycling worked with the hospital to not only recycle the food waste, but reduce it as well.

Castle Point in Bournemouth began using Eco Food Recycling on a trial basis last August, and it soon became apparent the restaurants were producing a great deal of food waste that could be diverted from landfill and the on-site compactor. The trial was so successful that the collection service was extended to coffee shops, and over 12 tonnes of food waste that would once have been destined for landfill has since been recycled. Castle Point operations manager Bill Riddle said, “We had no idea we were producing so much food waste, and we’re delighted that it’s now 100 per cent recycled. The service offered by Eco Food Recycling is excellent, punctual and pro-active.”

University of Southampton managers aim to eventually recycle all food waste on campus. Eco Food Recycling have so far collected 42 x 240-litre capacity bins containing a total of nearly four tonnes of food waste which has been delivered to a purpose-built composting facility run by Eco Sustainable Solutions at Parley, near Bournemouth, and turned into nutrient-rich compost. Mike Travers, University of Southampton campus services manager, said: “We’re very proud of our recycling efforts and working with Eco Food Recycling is further enhancing what our team is striving for … zero landfill.”

An eight-week trial at the University of Winchester was so successful that not only has the contract been extended but rolled out to other parts of the campus. To date almost 70 x 240-litre capacity bins have been collected, a total of just under seven tonnes of food waste. Mat Jane, University of Winchester energy and environmental manager, said: “With figures which are accurate to within 10 grams we’re able to calculate how much we’ve diverted from landfill … and the reduction in our carbon footprint.

Eco Food Recycling have been very pro-active and have delivered on everything they promised. We look forward to working with them in the future … and recycling 100 per cent of the university’s food waste.”

Harvest Fine Foods divert over 8 tonnes of food waste peelings in only 3 weeks

Eco Food Recycling food waste bins on site

Eco Food Recycling within the IVC (in vessel composting ) hall

Harvest Fine Foods, the Christchurch based Food wholesaler, who recently started their prepared vegetables service to their client base have diverted, from landfill, in excess of 8 tonnes of veg peelings in only 3 weeks.

The company decided to use the expertise of local food waste collection and recycling firm Eco Food Recycling as they were fully committed to diverting the food waste away from landfill and find a fully recyclable solution. With sales of the new service being accepted by the majority of their extensive client base, because of the freshness of the produce, and the fact that time and money can be saved by the many local Hotels and Restaurants that they supply on their daily delivery schedule.

Although the service is only 3 weeks old and still in its infancy the fact that over 8 tonnes of peelings have been created and ultimately diverted from landfill is staggering.

Richard Strongman, MD of Harvest Fine Foods said ” The uptake of our new service has not really surprised us as we were fully convinced that our client base needed this service but we have been staggered as to how much weight is involved with the vegetable peelings. Luckily we chose the correct company in Eco Food Recycling and they collect from us three times a week. We asked for exact bin weights, which they provided with their unique bin weighing system, and we get a monthly spreadsheet clearly showing how many bins of food waste have been collected and the exact weight that is collected and diverted from landfill.”

He added ” Communication is paramount in our business and this is a priority with Eco Food Recycling so we are looking forward to a long relationship with the company as we expand the fresh produce side of Harvest Fine Foods.”

Eco Food Recycling confirm food waste to be sent to AD

Trelawney Dampney - Eco Sustainable Solutions

Eco Food Recycling the Ringwood based commercial food waste and recycling company have confirmed that the food waste that is currently collected on their rounds will be taken to the new AD ( Anaerobic Digestion ) plant once it is opened in the autumn near Dorchester.

Currently the commercial food waste that is collected from Schools, Universities, Hotels, Restaurants, Pubs, Food Producers, Shopping Centres, Leisure Parks and company canteens is taken to a local IVC ( in vessel composting ) facility where after a prolongued 12/14 week process it is turned into compost.

A new AD plant is currently under construction at Piddlehinton near Dorchester and the site from Eco Sustainable Solutions is due to be commissioned and opened by autumn 2011 where the food waste will produce renewable energy. The project is the brainchild of Eco Sustainable Solutions MD – Trewlawney Dampney.

The state of the art AD facility will be able to accept packaged food from supermarkets along with both residential and commercial food waste with an anticipated capacity of 30,000 tonnes pa.

The coalition government are firmly behind AD as a fully sustainable solution to the food waste in the UK and the “waste review” that is due out in April will support this view.

Eco Food Recycling are firmly supportive of AD for the commercial food waste that they collect from their clients as their preferred recycling option.

Eco Food Recycling collect commercial food waste in Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey and Sussex and will shortly be announcing the ability to collect food waste from businesses in Somerset and Avon as well.

Food waste tops the agenda at NISP workshop instigated by Eco Food Recycling

Delegates at the NISP workshop

Discussion by delegates at recent NISP workshop

The NISP  “Food for thought” workshop held at Dudsbury Golf Club this week ( Tuesday 25th January) and co-sponsored by Eco Food Recycling attracted many local businesses that were looking to have food waste collected and diverted from landfill.

The half day event was attended by a selected group that included  Bournemouth Borough Council, Hall & Woodhouse Brewery, Littlesea Holiday Park, Poole Grammar School, Ministry of Justice (Prison Service) and the De Vere Village Hotel along with leading waste carriers including Eco Food Recycling the specialised food waste collection and recycling company from Ringwood.

The main sponsor of the event and one of the guest speakers were Eco Sustainable Solutions that take approx 30,000 tonnes of food waste at their site near Bournemouth Airport and turn it into compost. This is the site that is used by Eco Food Recycling as they collect commercial food waste from Hotels, Pubs, Restaurants, Universities, Schools, Hospitals and company canteens as their customers strive for a zero waste to landfill solution for the food waste that is produced within their establishments.

Tuesday’s workshop was attended by more than 50 invited guests with the theme of the event centred around commercial food waste although there were solution providers present for all waste streams.

Simon Heaps, Director of Eco Food Recycling said “NISP is a government funded organisation that creates synergies between parties as they look for cost effective methods of reducing their waste streams. Waste for one particular company can be a useful resource for another and NISP provide the expertise through these workshops to match up different companies with solution providers to benefit all parties concerned, create jobs and save money.”

He added “Food waste is a major problem within the area, as it across the UK, and by clearly explaining how food waste can be become a resource and a recyclable product as opposed to being sent to landfill sites will benefit not only the food producers but also the communities that we live in and is fully sustainable for our future generations.”

Among the speakers were Dorset Biodiesel who collect used cooking oil and through processing turn it into bio-diesel that can be used in cars, lorries and even on land trains. This presentation was of great interest to all concerned and in particular the local Bournemouth Council contingent.

NISP practitioners were on hand to clearly explain how synergies could be made and Vishwa Wijedasa who hosted the event on behalf of NISP was pleased with the success of the event and the attendance and hoped that many connections could be made between like minded businesses.

Food wholesaler use Eco Food Recycling to divert veg peelings away from landfill

Harvest Fine Foods have enlisted the services of Eco Food Recycling the Dorset based food waste collection and recycling company as they expand their established business to include prepared vegetables to their client base.

Harvest Fine Foods - Christchurch and their new food waste bins

The Christchurch based company which supplies dry, frozen, chilled foods and cleaning materials to caterers within a 35 mile radius of Bournemouth will be offering its customers a complete range of high quality fresh fruit and vegetables from 10th January 2011. Harvest Fine Foods will also be offering  bespoke high quality hand-prepared vegetables cut daily to order that will enable the many restaurants and hotels that they supply to use these pre-prepared vegetables instantly, saving time and money in the process.

With any vegetable preparation there must be some waste and Harvest Fine Foods asked Eco Food Recycling to collect and recycle the veg preparation leftovers and to divert them from landfill. With expectations high for this new venture the peelings from these vegetables will create a mountain of food waste if not handled properly.

Eco Food Recycling will be collecting the peelings on one of their designated food waste collection vehicle’s and after a prolonged process of 12/14 weeks the food waste will be turned into compost.

Harvest Fine Foods desire to find green alternatives to landfill was paramount in their decision to use a locally recognised company such as Eco Food Recycling to handle this waste stream.

Commercial food waste used for composting in St Louis

St Louis, Missouri the home of St Louis Composting

St Louis,Missouri has joined the long list of cities around the world that are starting to realise that commercial food waste can be fully recycled and turned into compost, a fully sustainable commodity that will divert this current waste stream away from landfill.

America discards more than 96 billion lbs of prepared food each year and St Louis Composting Inc is now composting in excess of 100 tonnes of out of date food and food processing by- products every week which will amount to over 5,000 tonnes per annum of commercial food waste that would normally have been destined for landfill.

Patrick Geraty, President, of St Louis Composting said “Just as environmentally conscious St. Louis restaurants have embraced menu selections that emphasize locally grown produce and meats, we are committed to extending the process full circle. By composting spent waste from restaurants, grocery stores and businesses, and then supplying the compost to local farmers to incorporate into their fields to improve their soil, we help increase produce yields. The locally grown produce finds its way back to the restaurants and onto diners’ plates – helping us to take the process even farther than from garden to table and back again.”

He added “We hope to process even more organic and food waste in the future as we recruit more businesses that generate volumes of food waste.”

What is happening in the US now has been operative in the UK for many years as companies such as Eco Sustainable Solutions of Bournemouth process nearly 30,000 tonnes of food waste at their site in Bournemouth within their IVC (in vessel composting ) facility.

One of the registered waste carriers that collects commercial food waste from establishments such as Hotels, Restaurants, Schools, Universities and Colleges, Pubs and Company Canteens is Eco Food Recycling, based in Ringwood, that have a food waste collection round that covers the counties of Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey and Sussex.

They chose Eco Sustainable Solutions as their disposal site because of their industry recognition and high recycling rates. All food waste that is collected by Eco Food Recycling and disposed of at the facility is 100% recycled, enabling their high profile customers to divert the food waste away from landfill and reduce their carbon footprint.

Eco Food Recycling celebrate xmas in style with the Bournemouth Chamber of Trade

Nigel Hedges- Bournemouth Chamber of Trade - President

Bournemouth Chamber of Trade

Over 250 guests attended the Bournemouth Chamber of Trade Xmas Party at the Marriott Highcliff Hotel last night ( Wednesday 15th December) including the staff of Eco Food Recycling who were visible on the Chamber ” Green Network ” table.

Bournemouth Chamber of Trade President Nigel Hedges welcomed the many companies that were represented before they entered the lavish Dorchester Suite to be wined, dined and entertained into the early hours.

The quality of the food and service was excellent and compliments were in abundance. The Marriott Highcliff Hotel has very strong moral responsibilities concerning recycling and food waste is very high on their agenda as they look to divert food waste away from landfill.

This view was echoed by Eco Food Recycling Directors Andy Jones and Simon Heaps as they have been in discussions with one of Bournemouth’s flagship Hotel’s for some months.

Hotel’s produce vast quantities of food waste every year and until very recently there was little or no option but to send the food waste to landfill. This has now changed and there are two key area’s for food waste to be collected and diverted away from landfill.

Firstly food waste can be collected and taken to an IVC ( in vessel composting ) facility whereby it is transformed into compost after a prolongued 12/14 week process. The second option is for the commercial food waste from Hotels to be taken to an AD ( anaerobic digestion ) plant and the methane gasses that are produced result in renewable energy.

Both processes of food waste recycling divert away from landfill. Eco Food Recycling offer a commercial food waste collection service within Dorset and Hampshire and specialise in the Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Ringwood, Wimborne and surrounding area’s.

New Forest Hotel Group use Eco Food Recycling to divert food waste from landfill

The New Forest Hotel Group have rolled out food waste collections in their entire group after extensive trialling with local Ringwood company Eco Food Recycling.

In an effort to increase its Group recyling figures the food waste is collected by Eco Food Recycling and taken to a nearby IVC (in vessel composting ) facility and fully recycled as opposed to being sent to landfill. Not only does this reduce carbon emissions from the Hotel but also proves to its loyal guests that the Group has strong moral environmental responsibilities.

” New Forest Hotels Group have been most impressed by the profesionalism and reliability of Eco Food Recycling and they have helped us increase our recycling figures by collecting our food waste and diverting it away from landfill. I would be happy to recommend them to any business that is looking to have their food waste collected and increase their recycling targets.” said Christine Turner the Group Operations Manager.

University uses food waste to achieve zero waste to landfill at basketball game

University of Michigan, USA

The University of Michigan recently held a basketball game whereby it adopted a zero waste initiative and all food waste and the utensils were composted.

During the game, all cups, plates, forks, napkins and trays were made of natural materials that can break down and are fully compostable.

It is thought that from this one game alone against Harvard University it created approx one tonne of food waste all of which was diverted from landfill and composted.

The Student Sustainability Initiative at the University of Michigan co-ordinated the event and Shelly Fabrizio,Director of Operations and Events said
“After being approached by the SSI about doing a zero waste game, we felt that it would be a great opportunity to use an athletic event to help educate the community and our guests about the benefits of recycling and composting as well as bring an awareness to some of the other sustainability initiatives we have taken on campus.”

Food waste at Universities and Colleges in the UK is created in extremely large quantities and the number that have this waste stream recycled is small compared to those establishments that put the food waste in their general waste and send to landfill.

Eco Food Recycling are currently collecting from two Universities in Hampshire who have added food waste to their list of recyclables and one of these produced nearly 3.5 tonnes of food waste in only eight weeks.

Both Universities have been pleased with the food waste collection service from Eco Food Recycling and a comment from one of the Uni’s that has 25,000 students on campus said “We have been considering food waste diversion for some time. Eco Food Recycling offered a service that took us from thinking to doing.

All food waste that Eco Food Recycling collect is taken to a local IVC ( in vessell composting ) facility where it is 100% recycled. The company offer a food waste collection service in six counties including Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey and Sussex.

Harvard University recycle food waste as they aim for zero waste to landfill initiative

Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA

One of America’s most famous Universities has produced a recycling handbook as it aims to hit “zero waste to landfill” targets and it includes food waste from all of the campus catering facilities within it’s guidelines.

The University that celebrates it’s 375th anniversary in 2011 is fully dedicated to hitting their landfill diversion targets and are now actually using compostable catering utensils as they strive to recycle all of their food waste from the outlets on campus.

The handbook fully explains how all waste streams can be recycled and none more so than the food waste. With in excess of 4,000 tonnes of compostables being recycled already it is the Universities aim to increase their current rate of 55% recyclables in 2010 to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2020.

In the UK many Universities are increasing their recyling figures by including food waste being diverted from landfill.

Two such Universities are the University of Southampton and the University of Winchester that are using Eco Food Recycling to collect the food waste that is produced on campus and have it 100% recycled at Eco Sustainable Solutions near Bournemouth Airport.

Eco Food Recycling are also producing accurate bin weights of the food waste collected and these are then relayed back to the Universities in a monthly management report so that the actual landfill diversion figures are added to the list of recyclables on both sites.

Adding on board weighing onto their vehicles has enabled Eco Food Recycling to have an advantage over other waste carriers and they have realised the importance of these recycling figures to their clients.

It is thought that many other Universities in the south will look to add food waste to its recyclables once these figures are known.

Top hotel group saves money by recycling food waste instead of landfill

Hyatt Regency Hotel,Princeton, New Jersey,USA

Figures have just been released that one of the hotels in the 445 Hyatt Regency Hotel Group, the Hyatt Regency Princeton in New Jersey, USA actually saved in excess of $10,000 by composting it’s food waste rather than sending it to landfill. This included food preparation at the hotel along with plate scrapings in the kitchen area.

The forward thinking Hotel group has a “green team” at each of it’s hotels who train fellow employees the environmental and monetary advantages of recycling waste.

One member of the team at Princeton, Charles Link, was the hotel’s Director of Engineering, and the driving force behind the food waste composting initiative.

“I learned about the opportunity for the hotel to recycle food waste, and ways of enhancing our already established programs,” he said.

In the UK hotels are just starting to embrace the idea’s about food waste recycling and are bringing in food waste specialists like Eco Food Recycling the Dorset based company who operate a food collection and disposal round on the south coast who take the food waste to a local composting facility.

Director of Eco Food Recycling Simon Heaps said “Many hotels in the area are now using our services to collect the food waste and have it recycled as opposed to sending it to landfill.

He added ” They are now also starting to realise that although food waste is pretty much the heaviest waste stream out there it can be recycled and can save money along with satisfying the moral and environmental issues that surround food waste going to landfill and the significant contribution to global warming that is caused by the methane gasses that are produced.”

Eco Food Recycling collect food waste from Hotels, Restaurants,Pubs,Schools, Colleges/Universities,Food Producers and  anybody that produces food waste and is looking for an alternative to landfill.

Landfill tax is set to rise again in April 2011 to £56 per tonne which is a financial reason to divert food waste from landfill and have it recycled.

Snow fails to stop food waste collection company

Collecting food waste from one of our clients

Eco Food Recycling braving the wintry weather as they collect their clients food waste bins

Food waste bins at 7am in the morning covered in snow

With the majority of the country covered in snow and ice and drivers warned to stay at home unless it is of extreme importance it is the “good old bin man” that is often forgotten as they have to attempt to go out in all conditions.

Eco Food Recycling the leading independant food waste collection service in the south that collects commercial food waste from businesses in six counties including Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey and Sussex were tested to the full today when the snow covered south and sub zero temperatures made collecting the food waste bins of their clients a very cold affair.

The Ringwood based food waste collection and recycling company were today faced with the option not to collect on time from their list of high profile clients or brave the conditions and pull out all the stops to ensure that all of the food waste bins were emptied on time.

Most waste carriers, especially the council refuse trucks that collect from residential properties, decided to stay in bed and not risk the snowy conditions that were on our streets this morning.

The decision was made that the clients must come first ahead of the warmth of staying at home.

Eco Food Recycling had been monitoring the changing weather conditions in the area’s where they were due to collect for the last 24 hours and decided that it was safe to travel on the main roads to collect from businesses on their food waste collection round. At no time was the safety of their staff compromised which was a tribute to the gritter lorries on the roads for the last few days.

With food waste to be collected from a number of sites from a national brewery chain,a leading shopping park,a hospital, leisure park, schools and restaurants it was important that these food waste wheelie bins were emptied on time to prevent overfilling, which in itself could cause a rodent problem, and inconvenience to the clients and their paying guests.

Eco Food Recycling offer food waste containment in South of England

Food waste is a major problem in the UK not only with residential food waste but also commercial food waste from hotels, pubs, restaurants etc.By using the simple “R” strategy as below then food waste can be controlled and possible savings made:

  • Re-think – By looking at what you buy ,eat and ultimately what food waste is thrown away can give you an insight into saving costs and not producing so much food waste.
  • Reduce – Look to buy smaller portions and keep a very close eye on expiry and use by dates. Buying in bulk is not always cheaper if you are actually creating food waste by not using it and having to throw it away because it is out of date.
  • Reuse – Many households and businesses discard food waste for one reason or another when, sometimes, it can actually be reused for soups, stocks and casseroles etc.
  • Recycle – If all else fails why send food waste to landfill when we know that it will create methane gasses that are harmful to our planet and environment, now and in the future. Why not recycle it and have a reputable food waste collection service collect your commercial food waste or your local council by means of kerbside collections of food waste. Food waste can now be recycled by IVC ( in vessel composting) whereby a prolonged process will turn food waste into compost or by AD ( Anaerobic Digestion) whereby food waste can be turned into renewable energy. Both recycling systems offer a fully sustainable solution to the problem of food waste in our society.

Eco Food Recycling can help with commercial food waste collections as they already collect in an area covering six counties including Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Sussex and Surrey. They have a food waste collection round and can suppply wheelie bins and a wheelie bin cleaning service. They are fully regulated by the Environment Agency as a waste carrier specialising in the collection of food waste.

Food waste bin weights now so important

With food waste commonly acknowledged as the heaviest waste stream produced it is no surprise that many companies are asking for accurate food waste weights so that they know exactly how much food waste is being diverted from landfill.

Unless a waste carrier provides these accurate figures, not guesstimates, it is very difficult for the food waste producer to actually know what waste they have produced and how much can be taken out of the “general waste” bin and diverted from landfill.

Eco Food Recycling the food waste specialist carrier on the south coast that covers six counties including Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey and Sussex now has sophisticated on board weighing that gives this information to their clients. Not only does it tell how much food waste is being diverted from landfill it also gives the figures so that the producer of the food waste can try to reduce the waste that is created.

Although many companies are trying to increase their recycling figures and the addition of food waste to their cardboard, glass and plastics etc does help it is actually a very fine line to get this right.

If recycling food waste figures go up then that is good but if food waste recycling figures go up too far that is bad.By using the “R” principles of re-think,re-use,reduce or recycle then it is possible to increase recycling figures but potentially save money.Think about it !!! This would be regarded as excellent food waste management.

Eco Food Recycling offer a food waste collection service in the south of England that is used by Hotels, Restaurants, Pubs, Hospitals, Shopping Centres,Care Homes, Food Producers and Leisure Parks to name a few, whereby food waste is collected, weighed and reports created, and disposed of and recycled at a local IVC ( in vessel composting ) facility.

Food waste collection service to expand in Southern England

Eco Food Recycling the Ringwood based commercial food waste collection and recycling company have expanded their area ,where food waste collections from businesses are made, so that they now cover six counties in the South of England.

Dorset,Hampshire,Wiltshire,Berkshire,Surrey and Sussex are now serviced by Eco Food Recycling as they make commercial food waste collections enabling customers to divert food waste from landfill.

The company have many high profile clients including leading brewery chains, shopping centres, hotels, schools and leisure parks as they collect food waste, divert it from landfill and have it recycled.

With legislation about food waste imminent it has no surprise that environmentally friendly businesses are now having their food waste collected before they are forced to do so by the government. Eco Food Recycling are finding that customers of all sizes are contacting them, hence the need to expand their food waste collection rounds in new area’s.

Cleaning of wheelie bins with food waste,so important

Dirty bin before cleaning

The clean bin once the wheelie bin cleaning service has been used.

Now that food waste collections are increasing in the commercial sector, the importance of cleaning wheelie bins on a regular basis should be high on the agenda of any environmental manager of an establishment producing food waste.

It has been known for many years that food waste attracts vermin, mainly rats and sqirrels, as they look to source their food from somebody else’s discarded leftovers.

What is often neglected is the hygiene problems that are multiplied, week by week, if a food waste wheelie bin is not cleaned reguarly.

Maggot infestation, especially during the summer months, is one of the main problems that can be prevented if your wheelie bin is reguarly cleaned.Rotting food waste that compacts day by day only attracts flies and ultimately maggots and if these are carried back to the kitchen by members of staff, on their clothing, then it is not difficult to understand how hygiene standards may be compromised.

Eco Food Recyling empty many food waste bins on a daily basis and see many examples of maggots, rats and squirrels that could easily be prevented by having a regular wheelie bin cleaning service and by adopting some simple disciplines.

  • Always ensure that the lid of your food waste bin is closed fully to prevent vermin entering.Use a locked bin preferably
  • Always place food waste in bio-degradeable bags to ensure that the bin is kept clean and to reduce smells
  • Always make sure that your bio-degradeable food waste bags are tied and placed in the bin rather than just being dumped or thrown which could cause food waste to escape into the confines of the wheelie bin
  • Call Eco Food Recycling to have your wheelie bin cleaned on a regular basis giving you a  clean bin at all times

By adopting these simple rules your kitchen will be a safer and more hygienic area and never forget that your food waste bin is an extension of your kitchen.
