Eco Food Recycling collect food waste for major waste management companies

Eco Food Recycling have increased their commercial food waste collections by taking extra sites on board for one of the largest waste management companies in the UK.

Whitbread, the major pub and hotel chain, use VEOLIA to handle all of their waste management issues including the collection of food waste from their Premier Inn Hotels and associated Restaurants.

With the next “roll out” of sites commencing towards the end of January, Veolia have turned to Eco Food Recycling, a specialist food waste collection and recycling company, to collect the food waste from a number of new sites.

The Ringwood based food waste collection company are already servicing Whitbread sites in Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey and Sussex as a sub contractor on behalf of Veolia.

Veolia Environmental Services have been using Eco Food Recycling for many months and Sarah Hester the Whitbread Corporate Account Manager recently said ‘I have found the service provided by Eco Food Recycling  extremely reliable and professional. Their dedication to drive food waste away from landfill within their operating area’s has enabled us to increase recycling with some of our key customers in the area. The proactive nature of the after sales service is second to none and I would have no hesitation in recommending their services to others’

Eco Food Recycling are currently collecting commercial food waste for Veolia and have been accepted by all of the major players in the waste management industry as they look for specialist food waste collect companies to assist with their clients.

Food wholesaler use Eco Food Recycling to divert veg peelings away from landfill

Harvest Fine Foods have enlisted the services of Eco Food Recycling the Dorset based food waste collection and recycling company as they expand their established business to include prepared vegetables to their client base.

Harvest Fine Foods - Christchurch and their new food waste bins

The Christchurch based company which supplies dry, frozen, chilled foods and cleaning materials to caterers within a 35 mile radius of Bournemouth will be offering its customers a complete range of high quality fresh fruit and vegetables from 10th January 2011. Harvest Fine Foods will also be offering  bespoke high quality hand-prepared vegetables cut daily to order that will enable the many restaurants and hotels that they supply to use these pre-prepared vegetables instantly, saving time and money in the process.

With any vegetable preparation there must be some waste and Harvest Fine Foods asked Eco Food Recycling to collect and recycle the veg preparation leftovers and to divert them from landfill. With expectations high for this new venture the peelings from these vegetables will create a mountain of food waste if not handled properly.

Eco Food Recycling will be collecting the peelings on one of their designated food waste collection vehicle’s and after a prolonged process of 12/14 weeks the food waste will be turned into compost.

Harvest Fine Foods desire to find green alternatives to landfill was paramount in their decision to use a locally recognised company such as Eco Food Recycling to handle this waste stream.

Eco Food Recycling offer a food waste collection and recycling service to businesses including food producers and catering outlets within Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey and Sussex.

Commercial food waste used for composting in St Louis

St Louis, Missouri the home of St Louis Composting

St Louis,Missouri has joined the long list of cities around the world that are starting to realise that commercial food waste can be fully recycled and turned into compost, a fully sustainable commodity that will divert this current waste stream away from landfill.

America discards more than 96 billion lbs of prepared food each year and St Louis Composting Inc is now composting in excess of 100 tonnes of out of date food and food processing by- products every week which will amount to over 5,000 tonnes per annum of commercial food waste that would normally have been destined for landfill.

Patrick Geraty, President, of St Louis Composting said “Just as environmentally conscious St. Louis restaurants have embraced menu selections that emphasize locally grown produce and meats, we are committed to extending the process full circle. By composting spent waste from restaurants, grocery stores and businesses, and then supplying the compost to local farmers to incorporate into their fields to improve their soil, we help increase produce yields. The locally grown produce finds its way back to the restaurants and onto diners’ plates – helping us to take the process even farther than from garden to table and back again.”

He added “We hope to process even more organic and food waste in the future as we recruit more businesses that generate volumes of food waste.”

What is happening in the US now has been operative in the UK for many years as companies such as Eco Sustainable Solutions of Bournemouth process nearly 30,000 tonnes of food waste at their site in Bournemouth within their IVC (in vessel composting ) facility.

One of the registered waste carriers that collects commercial food waste from establishments such as Hotels, Restaurants, Schools, Universities and Colleges, Pubs and Company Canteens is Eco Food Recycling, based in Ringwood, that have a food waste collection round that covers the counties of Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey and Sussex.

They chose Eco Sustainable Solutions as their disposal site because of their industry recognition and high recycling rates. All food waste that is collected by Eco Food Recycling and disposed of at the facility is 100% recycled, enabling their high profile customers to divert the food waste away from landfill and reduce their carbon footprint.

Eco Food Recycling celebrate xmas in style with the Bournemouth Chamber of Trade

Nigel Hedges- Bournemouth Chamber of Trade - President

Bournemouth Chamber of Trade

Over 250 guests attended the Bournemouth Chamber of Trade Xmas Party at the Marriott Highcliff Hotel last night ( Wednesday 15th December) including the staff of Eco Food Recycling who were visible on the Chamber ” Green Network ” table.

Bournemouth Chamber of Trade President Nigel Hedges welcomed the many companies that were represented before they entered the lavish Dorchester Suite to be wined, dined and entertained into the early hours.

The quality of the food and service was excellent and compliments were in abundance. The Marriott Highcliff Hotel has very strong moral responsibilities concerning recycling and food waste is very high on their agenda as they look to divert food waste away from landfill.

This view was echoed by Eco Food Recycling Directors Andy Jones and Simon Heaps as they have been in discussions with one of Bournemouth’s flagship Hotel’s for some months.

Hotel’s produce vast quantities of food waste every year and until very recently there was little or no option but to send the food waste to landfill. This has now changed and there are two key area’s for food waste to be collected and diverted away from landfill.

Firstly food waste can be collected and taken to an IVC ( in vessel composting ) facility whereby it is transformed into compost after a prolongued 12/14 week process. The second option is for the commercial food waste from Hotels to be taken to an AD ( anaerobic digestion ) plant and the methane gasses that are produced result in renewable energy.

Both processes of food waste recycling divert away from landfill. Eco Food Recycling offer a commercial food waste collection service within Dorset and Hampshire and specialise in the Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Ringwood, Wimborne and surrounding area’s.

Eco Food Recycling offer food waste containment in South of England

Food waste is a major problem in the UK not only with residential food waste but also commercial food waste from hotels, pubs, restaurants etc.By using the simple “R” strategy as below then food waste can be controlled and possible savings made:

  • Re-think – By looking at what you buy ,eat and ultimately what food waste is thrown away can give you an insight into saving costs and not producing so much food waste.
  • Reduce – Look to buy smaller portions and keep a very close eye on expiry and use by dates. Buying in bulk is not always cheaper if you are actually creating food waste by not using it and having to throw it away because it is out of date.
  • Reuse – Many households and businesses discard food waste for one reason or another when, sometimes, it can actually be reused for soups, stocks and casseroles etc.
  • Recycle – If all else fails why send food waste to landfill when we know that it will create methane gasses that are harmful to our planet and environment, now and in the future. Why not recycle it and have a reputable food waste collection service collect your commercial food waste or your local council by means of kerbside collections of food waste. Food waste can now be recycled by IVC ( in vessel composting) whereby a prolonged process will turn food waste into compost or by AD ( Anaerobic Digestion) whereby food waste can be turned into renewable energy. Both recycling systems offer a fully sustainable solution to the problem of food waste in our society.

Eco Food Recycling can help with commercial food waste collections as they already collect in an area covering six counties including Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Sussex and Surrey. They have a food waste collection round and can suppply wheelie bins and a wheelie bin cleaning service. They are fully regulated by the Environment Agency as a waste carrier specialising in the collection of food waste.

AD framework for food waste announced by DEFRA

Lord Henley - Environment Minister

The government has chaired a steering group on Anaerobic Digestion ( AD ) that has been made up of government departments, industry representatives, communities and local government officials with a view to developing AD plants in the UK and the subsequent recycling of food waste.

Lord Henley,Environment Minister said

“This Government is committed to working with trade bodies, local authorities, communities and other interested parties in developing our framework for the development of anaerobic digestion, drawing on the widest possible range of expertise. This document is a starting point to find out the best possible way we can produce energy from waste through anaerobic digestion.”

With food waste currently going mostly to IVC ( in-vessel composting ) it is paramount that this working committee look at the way that AD plants can come to the fore in the coming years as we strive to achieve a zero waste to landfill society in the future.

Without AD plants in abundance around the country it will be difficult for DEFRA to introduce legislation to prevent food waste going to landfill.

Eco Food Recycling the Ringwood based specialist food waste collection and recycling company are fully behind any plans to introduce AD plants into the country as they strive to dispose of the food waste that they collect and divert from landfill.

Food waste collection company brave the weather

Eco Food Recycling the southern based commercial food waste collection company braved the bad weather that has hit the country and reported that all collections from the major brewey chain of pubs and hotels that it collects from were made on schedule. (Tuesday 30th November)

With the country facing cold artic snowy conditions the Ringwood based independent food waste collection company pulled out all the stops to ensure that none of it’s customers were let down.Collecting food waste bins is not the easiest at the best of times because of the weights involved but when pathways around the rear of pubs and hotels are covered in snow, like today, then safety must be paramount for the staff involved.

The Eco Food Recycling staff were kitted out in special cold weather gear including non slip rubber soled boots as they braved the elements in their quest to collect the food waste and take it to the recycling plant as opposed to sending it to landfill.

Eco Food Recycling have food waste collection rounds in Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire,Berkshire,Surrey and Sussex.

Food waste collection service to expand in Southern England

Eco Food Recycling the Ringwood based commercial food waste collection and recycling company have expanded their area ,where food waste collections from businesses are made, so that they now cover six counties in the South of England.

Dorset,Hampshire,Wiltshire,Berkshire,Surrey and Sussex are now serviced by Eco Food Recycling as they make commercial food waste collections enabling customers to divert food waste from landfill.

The company have many high profile clients including leading brewery chains, shopping centres, hotels, schools and leisure parks as they collect food waste, divert it from landfill and have it recycled.

With legislation about food waste imminent it has no surprise that environmentally friendly businesses are now having their food waste collected before they are forced to do so by the government. Eco Food Recycling are finding that customers of all sizes are contacting them, hence the need to expand their food waste collection rounds in new area’s.

Cleaning of wheelie bins with food waste,so important

Dirty bin before cleaning

The clean bin once the wheelie bin cleaning service has been used.

Now that food waste collections are increasing in the commercial sector, the importance of cleaning wheelie bins on a regular basis should be high on the agenda of any environmental manager of an establishment producing food waste.

It has been known for many years that food waste attracts vermin, mainly rats and sqirrels, as they look to source their food from somebody else’s discarded leftovers.

What is often neglected is the hygiene problems that are multiplied, week by week, if a food waste wheelie bin is not cleaned reguarly.

Maggot infestation, especially during the summer months, is one of the main problems that can be prevented if your wheelie bin is reguarly cleaned.Rotting food waste that compacts day by day only attracts flies and ultimately maggots and if these are carried back to the kitchen by members of staff, on their clothing, then it is not difficult to understand how hygiene standards may be compromised.

Eco Food Recyling empty many food waste bins on a daily basis and see many examples of maggots, rats and squirrels that could easily be prevented by having a regular wheelie bin cleaning service and by adopting some simple disciplines.

  • Always ensure that the lid of your food waste bin is closed fully to prevent vermin entering.Use a locked bin preferably
  • Always place food waste in bio-degradeable bags to ensure that the bin is kept clean and to reduce smells
  • Always make sure that your bio-degradeable food waste bags are tied and placed in the bin rather than just being dumped or thrown which could cause food waste to escape into the confines of the wheelie bin
  • Call Eco Food Recycling to have your wheelie bin cleaned on a regular basis giving you a  clean bin at all times

By adopting these simple rules your kitchen will be a safer and more hygienic area and never forget that your food waste bin is an extension of your kitchen.

Food waste legislation ?

With legislation looming that food waste cannot be “dumped” into landfill the question must be asked as to where the food waste will go once it is collected.

The coalition government are pushing AD (Anaerobic Digestion) plants as they strive for a waste to energy society but unless investment is made and planning approvals rapidly pushed through by local councils then the disposal of the food waste will be a major problem as there are currently not enough disposal sites either AD or IVC ( in vessel composting ) available.

With waste carriers looking to reduce their carbon footprint it is amazing that food waste is carried the length and breadth of the country sometimes in their quest not only to find a disposal site that will take commercial food waste and residential food waste but also one that makes it profitable for the carrier by having a competitive gate fee.

At present because the disposal sites for food waste are so rare the gates fees ( or disposal costs ) do not get too competitive because the transportation costs to a cheaper food waste disposal site would negate the cheaper disposal costs, so the site has the upper hand.

For example Eco Food Recycling the leading independant food waste carrier in the South of England who make food waste collections in Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey and Sussex use a well renowned disposal site very close to Bournemouth Airport.

The closest food waste disposal sites to this would be Exeter to the west, Oxford to the north and London to the south and east. This goes to prove that food waste legislation which will come into force in the coming years as the government look to achieve their EU recycling directive targets will need many more food waste disposal sites.

In Ireland legislation has been in force since July that any food producer that has in excess of 50 kg of food waste per week cannot send it to landfill. If this was introduced into this country it would mean that every Hotel and Guest House, Restaurant,Cafe and Pub along with Universities/Colleges,Schools, Large Canteens, Supermarkets,Fast Food outlets,Hospitals, Care Homes and many more food producers around the country would not be allowed  to dispose of their food waste into their general waste and ultimately into landfill.

Major Brewery Chain to introduce food waste collections in South of England

As a continuation of it’s “Corporate Social Responsibilty Review 2009″ Mitchells & Butlers have decided to include food waste collections throughout selected pubs in the South of England.

The company conducted  a series of extensive food waste trials with Biffa , its waste contractor, and concluded that 30% of it’s general waste was food waste mainly from food preparation and plate scrapings. With a view to diverting this significant tonnage of food waste from landfill the company aim to increase it’s current level of 21,000 tonnes of recycled waste this year.

Food waste in the licensed trade is significant and M & B have shown a very high moral and environmental stand on all of it’s waste and with food waste now being recycled as opposed to going to landfill it will only help increase that 4 out of every 5 Mitchells and Butlers public houses are now taking part in their recycling initiatives.

Eco Food Recycling offer a bin cleaning service to their clients

Eco Food Recycling have added to there list of services alongside their food waste collection rounds by teaming up with the most innovative bin cleaning company in the UK and offering a bin clean service to their customers.

Because of the potential environmental problems with cleaning bins on site it is often overlooked by many establishments who turn a “blind eye” to the state of their bins. This can cause health, hygiene and environmental issues.

A full bin cleaning service is now offered to clients in Dorset, Hampshire and West Sussex whereby all wheelie bins upto 1100 Euro bin size are cleaned within the confines of a dedicated 18 tonne bin cleaning vehicle.

2500 litres of recycled water is kept on board and heated to 50 degrees and used in conjunction with an environmentally friendly cleaning agent, the bins are then cleaned in an enclosed area of the vehicle. The contaminated water is discharged at the end of the day at a designated water board site.

There is strict legislation that states that no effluent waste water should end up within any storm drain which could ultimately pollute the water course system. The company is fully regulated by the Environment Agency.

The Water Pollution Act 1991 states that most road gullies and drains are designed to carry surface water directly to the nearest river or stream, so any contaminated water discharge into them will cause pollution, which is an offence, with a maximum fine of £20,000 in a magistrates court.

Eco Food Recycling are proud to offer this service to their clients in the knowledge that not only will food waste bins be kept clean but they will be cleaned in a fully regulated environment by the UK’s leading bin cleaning company.

Dorset food waste collection company “buck the trend”

With government legislation looming that food waste must be diverted from landfill it is no surprise that a south coast company is in demand.

By Spring 2011 we will know what the coalition government have in store for the country as it announces it’s waste strategy review and we head towards a zero waste to landfill solution in the coming years. It is certain that food waste will be top of the list and the anticipated penalties could catch some companies by surprise.

Eco Food Recycling the Ringwood based food waste collection company has seen an increase in demand from companies with a strong environmental policy as they strive to increase recycling targets and divert waste from landfill.

These companies are already recycling cardboard, glass and plastics but are now looking at food waste as the next waste stream that can be diverted from landfill especially as it is the most harmful to our society going forward because of the methane gasses that are produced and the subsequent effect of global warming to our future.

Commercial food waste can now be collected by Eco Food Recycling and then recycled at their designated disposal site. The company is already dealing with Universities, Hotels, Shopping Centres,Leisure Parks, Restaurants and Pubs and collecting their food waste on a daily or weekly basis covering six counties in the South of England.

The collection round covers Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey and Sussex and is soon to include a major supermarket along with a major high street restaurant chain in the new year. With many businesses feeling that the economy is still tough it is a surprise that a small Dorset company is bucking the trend and is increasing trade on a weekly basis.

Co – Director Simon Heaps said ” Both my partner Andy Jones and I are extremely pleased with the business that we have secured since we formed the company in April of this year but we have worked very hard to give a specialised service in an industry that has neglected the importance of food waste collections and the subsequent recycling of that waste for such a long time.”

” We have introduced on board weighing onto our vehicles so that we can provide our clients with accurate figures as to how much food waste is diverted from landfill.” He added ” We believe that we have introduced something to the food waste collection industry in the south of england that other larger and more respectable companies cannot offer and we are actually picking up a lot of work, working on their behalf as a sub contractor because our service levels are so high.”

” We are more than happy for businesses to trial our food waste collection service because we are confident that they will not be dissapointed but most of all they will be totally surprised as to how much food waste is collected and ultimately diverted from landfill. This information can actually make the establishment more efficient and increase profitablity within the kitchen area.”

Pumpkins collected as food waste and turned into turf in Dorset

Eastleigh Borough Council launched a recent initiative to get the Borough residents to collect any Halloween pumpkins and have then recycled as part of their food waste collection round before being transported to the disposal site at Eco Sustainable Solutions close to Bournemouth Airport.

The Dorset based disposal site take the Councils food waste into their In Vessel Composting facility and after a prolongued process of 12/14 weeks it is transformed as compost and spread over the 400 acres of turf fields that the company own.

Local  Eastleigh Councillor Louise Bloom said “Our residents are great recyclers and this exciting initiative will provide the opportunity for the Halloween pumpkins to be recycled rather than wasted.”

Eco Food Recycling the Ringwood based food waste collection company who cover commercial food waste collections in Dorset, Wiltshire,Hampshire,Berkshire,Surrey and Sussex confirmed that since Halloween night on 31st October the amount of pumpkins that were collected in the food waste around the counties and ultimately recycled exceeded their expectations.

Commercial and residential food waste that is collected and then recycled is diverted from landfill and eases the global warming effect by putting food waste into the ground.

Landfill diversion weights demanded for food waste collections in Southern England

Eco Food Recycling the leading food waste collection and recycling company in southern England are continually being asked to provide weights of food waste collections as their list of clients demand figures to help with their landfill diversion targets.

With the majority of the waste collection industry neglecting to have bin weighing the Ringwood based company have seized the initiative by offering this service to their clients that include Universities,Hotels, Restaurant chains,Pubs,Schools,Shopping Centres and Tourist attractions.

Monthly management reports are produced that show the exact weight of the food waste that is diverted from landfill. With food waste in landfill being extremely harmful because of the methane gasses that are produced that contribute to global warming this is a welcome boost to all corporate companies that have an environmental policy.

Eco Food Recycling operate a food waste collection service and recycling in Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey and Sussex.

Food waste collection service in Southern England expanded by specialists

Eco Food Recycling the Ringwood based food waste collection company has expanded it’s area across the southern part of the country.

With food waste management now paramount in such a volatile economic climate Eco Food Recycling has identified the need for a food waste collection service whereby the food waste collected is 100% recycled as opposed to being sent to landfill.

Originally the company collected food waste from commercial businesses in the Bournemouth,Poole, Christchurch,Ringwood,Wimborne and surrounding area’s but because of the demand has now broadened its collection rounds to include area’s within Hampshire,Surrey,Berkshire,Wiltshire and Sussex.

The company that was formed in April 2010 has already surpassed all targets after securing food waste collection and recycling business from Hotels, Restaurant chains, Shopping Centres, Tourist attractions,Universities and Schools amongst its list of high profile clients.

Castlepoint Shopping Park launches food waste initiative with Eco Food Recycling

Eco Food Recycling Directors Andy Jones and Simon HeapsAn initiative between Bournemouth’s Castlepoint Shopping Park and ECO Food Recycling Ltd started in August to recycle food waste has hit the 7 ton target within 3 months. The trial was initially conducted with the support of the Frankie and Bennys and Nandos restaurants followed by Thorntons, Café Nero and Costa Coffee.

Bill Riddle, Operations Manager at Castlepoint, was invited to follow the recycling process with ECO Food Recycling Directors Simon Heaps and Andy Jones.  Once collected, the food waste is taken just 5 miles drive to the ECO Sustainable Solutions site.  Here Steve Harman the Operations Manager explained how the Invessel composting facility processes cooked and uncooked meat and foodstuffs.  The wasted is first shredded then allowed to heat up to sterilise and sampled and analysed after 10 – 12 days.  It is then moved outside for up to 14 weeks before the nutrient rich compost is screened for unwanted residues before being used on the 400 acre turf fields to replenish the soil harvested during the turf process.

“We are delighted to have been able to find a local solution that now reduces the amount of food waste going to landfill and we now expect more retailers to join the challenge to reduce the carbon footprint of the park,” said Bill Riddle.  “This will assist our target of 75% waste recycling for Castlepoint in 2011.”

Four years ago there was no recycling policy. Last year the retail park recycled 60% of all waste products with the help of a £25,000 Materials Recovery Facility machine installed in 2009 that is worked by four operatives who hand pick and segregate metal, paper, cardboard and plastic items.

Eco Food Recycling offer a commercial food waste collection service for local companies in the Bournemouth,Poole,Christchurch,Ringwood,Wimborne and surrounding area’s whereby all food waste collected is 100% recycled at the Eco Sustainable Solutions in-vessel composting facility.

Kitchen Caddies available from food waste collection and recycling company

Eco Food Recycling the Ringwood based commercial food waste collection and recycling company have found the need to constantly stock kitchen caddies as the demand from its customer base has increased in recent weeks.

The kitchen (or kerbside) caddies are available in a 23 litre size that easily accomodates the biodegradeable bags that Eco Food Recycling supply when servicing businesses in the Bournemouth,Poole,Christchurch,Ringwood,Wimborne and surrounding area’s when collecting the commercial food waste.

The kitchen caddies have a lid that helps within the kitchen area to prevent smells before the food waste is taken to the external food waste bin provided by the company.

With more companies realising their environmental responsibilities of having their commercial food waste recycled rather than taken to landfill has been the main reason for the increase in demand for the kitchen caddies.

If legislation was to come into operation that every business creating more than 50kg of food waste per week would have to divert this waste stream from landfill (as has happened in Ireland since 1st July 2010) then companies in England will panic as there is a limited number of food waste collection companies similar to Eco Food Recycling that will be able to accomodate the demand that would be created.

Ireland to lead the way in Business food waste collections and recycling

Businesses in Ireland will be forced to recycle the food waste that they produce from the start of July as a new policy called Food Waste Regulation (SI 508 of 2009) aims to divert food waste created by companies from landfill sites.

The food waste created by the likes of Hotels,Restaurants,Pubs,Care Homes and large Companies must be seperated from other sources of waste by being placed in special food waste bins.

The new regulations will divert the food waste created from landfill and be sent to Anaerobic Digestion plants (AD) meaning that the 10% of food waste that is currently recycled will be vastly increased in the years to come.

The new ruling (called foodwaste.ie) is an initiative of the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government and Cré-Composting and Anaerobic Digestion Association of Ireland.

If legislation was passed that commercial and business food waste could no longer be sent to landfill as part of “general waste” then companies such as Eco Food Recycling, based in Ringwood, and servicing Bournemouth,Poole,Christchurch,Ringwood,Wimborne and the surrounding area’s would be ideally suited to look after the demand that would be created.

It is thought that DEFRA (Department of Environmental ,Food and Rural Affairs) will be lobbying for this legislation to be approved and are calling for more AD plants to be built around the country.

As one of a very few independant food waste carriers in the UK Eco Food Recycling  are already proving to be a specialist in this waste stream and with the opening of a new AD plant to be opened in West Dorset by mid 2011 the final piece of the jigsaw will finally fall into place when commercial and business food waste can be recycled and converted into renewable energy.
