If we all were to stop wasting food that could have been eaten, it would have the same environmental benefit as removing 1 in 4 cars off the road.
Interesting fact – the waste of good food and drink is associated with 4% of the UK’s total water footprint.
Nearly 50% of food waste in the UK comes from our homes. We throw away nearly 7 million tonnes of food and drink from our homes every single year. Over 50% of that food waste is food and drink that we could have consumed.
With this much food waste, the average cost for a UK household is £470 per year and this rises to £700 if that household has children.
Why there is food waste – the truth
Put bluntly it is our own fault – we either cook or prepare too much or, we do not use the food we purchased, in time.
Interesting to note that the food we waste the most are fresh vegetables and salad, drink, fresh fruit and bakery items such as bread and cake.
Interesting fact – we throw away more food waste every year from our homes than we do packaging.
Here at Eco Food recycling we are doing our part to reduce the amount of food waste and increase the amount of food recycling that takes place. If your business would like to talk over food waste, waste and recycling, please feel free to get in touch.
